The largest monastery in central Ladakh and is widely noted for its resemblance to the Potala Palace in Tibet. The monastery is located at a distance of 19km(s) from Leh (the capital city), The monastery was founded in 1433 and contains exquisite age-old images, stupas, scroll paintings, and wall paintings and it has a 15 metres (48ft.) high exuberant statue of Maitreya Buddha which was built recently in 1980s. Thiksay monastery is famous for the morning prayers conducted every day, where tourists can also go and try to resonate with the spiritual vibe.
The monastery is also famous for the panoramic view of villages one experiences on either side of the hill with the Indus River in the background.
