To honour and acknowledge the contribution of farmers in Ladakh, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, SKUAST-K Nyoma organized National Farmer Day also known as KISAN DIWAS on 23rd of December 2023 at Satoo Kargyam Village, on the Indo-China border in the eastern part of Ladakh. Thirty five farmers including Sarpanch and other members from Satoo Kargyam village and staff of the Kendra were present during the event. Dr Phuntsog Tundup, Head KVK Nyoma, brief the gathering about the Significance of the day and some interesting facts about Chaudhary Charan Singh’s life. A scientist-farmer interaction was also held wherein various issues of farming in this very harsh terrain were raised. Dr Tundup has assured the farmers in resolving these issues with latest farming technologies.Onspot diagnostic visit was conducted and the infested leafy vegetables were treated with organic neem oil. Live demonstration on installation of low tunnel technologies were also carried out in farmer’s field. Later, protected structures like Low tunnel, Electric Butter Churner, portable sprayers for organic pesticides, black polythene mulch, neem oil, livestock medicines were distributed among the farmers. National Farmers’ Day is celebrated every year on 23 December to honour and appreciate all the responsible farmers for their contributions to society as farmers are the backbone of India’s economy and a significant contributor to rural prosperity. The day is observed to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mr. Choudhary Charan Singh, India’s fifth Prime Minister. He served the nation from 1979 to 1980. Within his short tenure, he developed several welfare programmes directed at improving the conditions of the farmers and empowering them. In 2001, the Government of India announced December 23 to be celebrated as National Farmer’s Day to honour Chaudhary Charan Singh’s contributions and his transformation from a farmer to the head of the state.
