The Food & Supplies,
Department come into existence in the district in the year 1960. Earlier there
was granaries system in the District. At present the Department is covering all
the 6 blocks of the district under public distribution system catering one lac
souls as per 1990 census plus 10,000 Tibetan refugees and the annual
approximate off-take of food grains and other essential commodities during the
past 10 years has remained 50,000 quintals each Rice/Atta , 5000 quintals Sugar
and 15 to 20 lac liters of K.Oil. At present there are 130 sale outlets in the
district thorugh which public distribution system rationing being covered in
the entire district under the following schemes: -
A.P.L (Above Poverty Line)
Under this scheme all the population of the district above 6
years of age are being provided ration at the scale of Rice 8 Kgs, Atta 6 Kgs
per head per month for Government employees and Rice 4 KGS and Atta 6 KGS per
head per month for people living in Muffasils and towns. Similarly Sugar 700
grms per head per month and 10 liters K.Oil per Ration Ticket / per family are
being issued. Besides salt is being provided in Muffasils and far/flung areas.
B.P.L
(Below Poverty Line)
Under this scheme the Government has floated a quota of
13100 families to be declared B.P.L families to be identified through a
committee vide Government order No: 17-FS of 1999 Dated: -9.04.1999 consisting
of Tehsildar Leh, Block Dev. Officer, Leh and
Inspector Food & Supplies, Leh. The committee has recommended and
approved the following families as beneficiary under this scheme.

Under this scheme the beneficiaries are getting 5 KGS Rice
/Atta at subsidized rates upto limit of 25 KGS per month per family.
A.A.Y (Antyodaya
Anna Yojna)
Under this scheme the poorest out of the B.P.L families are
being provided ration at the rate of specially subsidized for such families viz
Rice at the rate of Rs.3.00/per KG and Atta at the rate of Rs.2.21 /per KG with the maximum limit of
25 KGS per family per month. This quota is being issued at the liberty of the
rationees whether he/she lift the total quantity of 25 KGS at one time or at
many intervals by piece meals viz he/she can take 5 KGS at one time and so on
at other time. Under this scheme the No of families .
Beneficiaries identified are 1900 in the District.

4. ANNAPURNA ANN YOJNA SCHEME
Under this scheme this Department is providing 10 KG’s
Rice/Atta free of cost to destitute persons above the age of 65 years and the
list has been identified and recommended under this scheme by the Social Welfare
Deptt.Leh. The allocations of beneficiaries under this scheme are 100 persons
each from MLA constituencies and 50 families from MLC constituencies in all. At
present we are providing 10 KGS Rice /Atta 250 families as per the following
Block- Wise statement.

The
public distribution system in Leh district are going on fairly and successfully
and this is the district in J&K state where 100 % coverage and 100 % fair
distribution are in force.
